Roundstone Historical Walking Tour

A Clifden Arts Festival Special

Stroll through Roundstone, Connemara’s most picturesque village, with a professional historian and archaeologist. Discover a rich history; hidden places and the fascinating men and women who lived here – writers, artists, musicians, revolutionaries, scientists, engineers and merchants.

Uncover the enduring legacy of Alexander Nimmo, who built Roundstone and the tragedies and triumphs of revolutionaries Alice Cashel and Bulmer Hobson – dubbed ‘Ireland’s most dangerous man’. View Connemara’s Gaelic coast from here, with its maritime heritage of traditional boats, fishing, trade and the ever-present danger of shipwreck. Learn of the area’s ancient monasteries and the Christian denominations that developed Roundstone’s religious traditions and architecture. Learn of the botanical, archaeological, historical and geological treasures of Roundstone Bog which linked the world through the Marconi Wireless Station and the flight of Alcock and Brown.

The walk, which has been researched by Eamonn P. Kelly and Erin Gibbons, is guided by Eamonn P. Kelly.
