Celebrating Seán Ó Riada: Peter Browne in Conversation with Sean Ó Sé
This year saw the 50th anniversary of the death of Seán Ó Riada in October 1971 – his life’s’s work was immense and his influence is far-reaching even to this day. This work includes his classical compositions, orchestral arrangements of traditional music, film music e.g Mise Éire, his academic work in UCC, his illustrated lectures on traditional music and song on radio and television and the formation of the group Ceoltóirí Chualann which created a new way for ensemble playing of traditional music.
Today’s talk looks at just one aspect of Seán Ó Riada’s importance; his interaction with radio in the 1960s with the series “Our Musical Heritage” and the programmes with Ceoltóirí Chualann – “Reacaireacht an Riadaigh” and “Fleadh Cheoil an Raidió”
One of those who knew Seán Ó Riada well is singer Seán Ó Sé, a close family friend, who participated in much of his musical work over the years. His memories and insights will be of great value and interest today.
Peter Browne is from Dublin – uilleann piper, flute and tin-whistle player, lecturer, record producer and former RTÉ radio producer and presenter. He has been active in the traditional music world from a very early age and has a particular interest in the history of how this music has interacted with radio broadcasting in quite a dynamic way over the years.
